Review of Mark Sisson’s “Primal Blueprint”

Mark Sisson has come out is his much anticipated book Primal Blueprint.  This book not only covers fat loss, but also how to maximize your genes, reduce the risk of terminal illness, and have a great physique without every stepping foot in the gym.  Having read a lot of health and fitness books, I can honestly say this is one of the best, most natural approaches to creating physical excellence in your life.  While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, here is a quick run down of the pros and cons of Primal Blueprint.

Pros:

  • The book is exceptionally well researched.

Mr. Sisson truly outdoes himself with the number of sources he uses in supporting his points. The benefit is you can have some peace of mind in knowing that these are not just beliefs of one man, but a large body of ever-growing evidence attests to the dangers of the normal, civilized diet and the benefits of going more primal.  You will be shocked when you read about: the dangers of over prescribed medications, the easy, but often concealed solutions to everyday health issues like colds, and how to enjoy an active life well into your 70′s and 80′s.

  • You come away with a complete diet and exercise plan.

This is not one of those teaser books that is just going to leave you hanging and having to buy more stuff to get the full benefit.  Sisson explains in his book that losing fat, living a long, healthy life, and looking great are 80% due to what goes into your body.  Imagine a system that helps you realize the fullness of your genetic potential. When you sign up for his newsletter, you get a detailed program of how to move and exercise in a way that perfectly compliments your new lifestyle.  The great thing is no gym is needed.  You will find out how to get a great workout without ever lifting a dumbbell. This approach saves you both time and money.

  • The evidence is overwhelming.

The amount and quality of testimonials on Mark’s blog www.MarksDailyApple.com is simply astounding.  Of all the programs I have tried and reviewed, this program has some of the most impressive personal stories I have ever seen.  Even better, people are also reporting decreased pain and sickness as well as other perks like sleeping better.  The crazy thing about Mark’s book is he is not the first one to advocate this kind of lifestyle.  He is, however, the first person who has assembled a total system that will let you maximize your health and physique.  Imagine getting the kind of body you have always wanted and in the process getting better sleep, having more energy, and getting sick less.

Cons:

  • Replacing junk food and grains with quality organic produce and meat is expensive.

Isn’t it interesting that the foods that are killing you are actually the cheapest and easiest to come by?  Once you get over the irony of this dietary injustice, get ready for your grocery bill to go up.  The good news is the increase shouldn’t be too much to handle once you get rid of all bread and junk food buying.  Primal Blueprint shows you how to manage your food budget to keep cost down by selecting the best kinds of groceries at the best price. While not everyone will be able to go completely organic and cage free, simply changing your diet to the recommended kinds of foods will still produce results.

  • You will go against societal norms.

Believe it or not, people in your life will be shocked by your decision to practically abandon grain (I say practically because of the 80/20 principle discussed in the book).  You will catch flack about your new lifestyle, but take heart in the fact that you are about to reveal a superior lifestyle to those who you love the most.  Stick with it and results will come.  In the end, you will be the one with the smile on your face asking why everyone is so tired after gorging on a bread basket.

  • You will experience strong cravings.

Give primal a good two to three weeks to take root.  In that time, you will experience cravings for the grain and junk that you have left behind. It is imperative that you stay pure primal during this transition.  Once the given amount of time has elapsed, your cravings for the old should have subsided and you will start craving things like fresh fruit and steak (although maybe not at the same time).  Also, if you cheat in these first few weeks, just start the clock over again.  Cravings are more psychological than anything.  So, by indulging your old ways, you have just recharged your desire for those foods.  Stay strong and soon enough you will start to think of carrots as sweet.

While my personal journey going primal has just begun, I believe this solution to be one that would solve most people’s issues of losing fat, over medicating, and generally lacking vitality.  I will be posting my progress on my blog.  As of now, I strongly recommend you taking a look at Primal Blueprint.
